    Jordan<\/strong><\/h4>

    is a young state that occupies an ancient land, one that bears the traces of many civilizations. Separated from ancient\u00a0Palestine\u00a0by the\u00a0Jordan River, the region played a prominent role in biblical history. The ancient biblical kingdoms of\u00a0Moab,\u00a0Gilead, and\u00a0Edom\u00a0lie within its borders, as does the famed red stone city of\u00a0Petra, the capital of the Nabatean kingdom and of the Roman province of Arabia Petraea. British traveler\u00a0Gertrude Bell\u00a0said of Petra, \u201cIt is like a\u00a0fairy tale\u00a0city, all pink and wonderful.\u201d Part of the\u00a0Ottoman Empire\u00a0until 1918 and later a\u00a0mandate\u00a0of the United Kingdom, Jordan has been an independent kingdom since 1946. It is among the most politically liberal countries of the Arab world, and, although it shares in the troubles affecting the region, its rulers have expressed a commitment to maintaining peace and stability.<\/p>

    The capital and largest city in the country is\u00a0Amman\u2014named for the\u00a0Ammonites, who made the city their capital in the 13th century\u00a0BCE. Amman was later a great city of Middle Eastern antiquity, Philadelphia, of the Roman\u00a0Decapolis, and now serves as one of the region\u2019s principal commercial and transportation centres as well as one of the Arab world\u2019s major cultural capitals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n

    Land<\/b><\/h4>

    Slightly smaller in area than the country of Portugal, Jordan is bounded to the north by\u00a0Syria, to the east by\u00a0Iraq, to the southeast and south by\u00a0Saudi Arabia, and to the west by\u00a0Occupied Palestine. The West Bank area (so named because it lies just west of the Jordan River) was under Jordanian rule from 1948 to 1967, but in 1988 Jordan renounced its claims to the area. Jordan has 16 miles (26 km) of coastline on the\u00a0Gulf of Aqaba\u00a0in the southwest, where\u00a0Al-aqaba, its only port, is located.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    Although Jordan\u2019s economy is relatively small and faces numerous obstacles, it is comparatively well diversified. Trade and finance combined account for nearly one-third of Jordan\u2019s\u00a0gross domestic product\u00a0(GDP); transportation and communication, public utilities, and construction represent one-fifth of total GDP, and mining and manufacturing\u00a0constitute\u00a0nearly that proportion.
